Rich Immersive Landscapes Evoking Place, Memory and Connection

Your home is a retreat. Somewhere special that allows you to be the curator. I create paintings which lead you to your own piece of somewhere. My paintings invite you to slow down, to pause, to reflect. My desire, each time I pick up my brush, is to coax into being somewhere special that you can connect to.

I’m Clare Matthews, a mixed media artist living in beautiful New Zealand. My work is inspired by our natural environment…the light, the weather, the layers. I’m interested in exaggerating this beauty and drama through the imaginative use of colour, line and a variety of marks and shapes.

I love the constant dance with different media, adding, scraping back, scratching, flooding with paint until I feel the painting is suggesting something. This conversation continues until there is nothing left to add, at which point I invite you to pick up the thread.
